Abstract

BACKGROUND

Ostomy creation, which involves bowel incontinence, has a significant impact on the QoL (Quality of Life) of colostomised patients. The rehabilitative practice of retrograde colostomy irrigation could ensure a better QoL for patients with descending colostomy and sigmoidostomy.

OBJECTIVES

This paper aims to map the literature and synthesize evidence on this procedure used in care practice as well as to examine its relationship with quality of life so as to promote its diffusion.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted between June and September 2023 according to the methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, Levac et al. and the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-analysis extension-Scoping Reviews) guidelines.

 RESULTS

Six papers (five primary studies and one secondary study) were included. They were published from 2010 to 2021, mainly in Australia and Europe. Two papers adopted a mixed methods approach, providing both quantitative and qualitative data. Fifty per cent of the studies investigated the QoL with the use of rating scales and the attribution of a score; furthermore, the physical dimension was the most analysed dimension (80%), followed by the social dimension (70%) and the psychological dimension (50%). Patients perceive an improvement in body image and a reduction in anxiety about the possible detachment of the device and fear of soiling. The reduction in the use of collection devices, with an increase in comfort, is also reported.

In addition, the investigation revealed the critical aspects associated with CI (Colostomy Irrigation) and the difficulties in promoting this procedure.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

CI is an evidence-based procedure. Scientific evidence allows the quality of nursing care to be strengthened and the QoL of colostomised patients to be increased. However, further studies are needed to explore specific aspects related to the lack of knowledge and dissemination of this practice.
